1. I need help finding a job or career.
GoodProspects
For people looking for a job or a new career, GoodProspects offers registered users the ability to assess which job or career path is right for you. Registered users explore career paths in a variety of fields:
- Health Care
- Hospitality and Food Service
- Clerical and Office
- Green Jobs
- Customer Service
- Retail
- Education and Social Services
In each of these groups, registered users are provided an online career coach – an individual to help guide career exploration. These coaches are there to answer questions and provide ideas for ways to determine if a certain career is right for an individual. In addition, registered users meet other online job seekers who are working through similar career issues and trying to figure out the best line of work for the coming years.
GoodProspects is a project of Goodwill Industries International, Inc., funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration.
My Skills My Future
mySkills myFuture helps laid-off workers and other career changers find new occupations to explore. Users can identify occupations that require skills and knowledge similar to their current or previous job, learn more about these suggested matches, locate local training programs, and/or apply for jobs. The website is sponsored by U. S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.
Goodwill Industries International
In addition to GoodProspects, Goodwill Industries International offers customized job training, employment placement at over 165 independent, community-based Goodwills in the United States and Canada. Check out their website to see if you can benefit from a local career center near you.
2. I need help getting an education and/or acquiring skills.
CSO College Center
Thinking about applying to college? The Center for Student Opportunity’s College Center offers tools to make it happen. You can create a free profile, letting you send your academic and extracurricular profile to colleges and universities recruiting first-generation, low-income, and minority students. Free services include monthly email newsletters, college admissions guidance and support, and the chance to win a $2,000 Opportunity Scholarship and become a future Opportunity Scholars blogger at the end of your senior year.
National College Access Network and The National College Access Directory
The National College Access Network’s mission is to build communities committed to college access and success so that all students can achieve their educational dreams. Their members often provide resources that can help get you into college. Check out the links above to find organizations near you that can help you achieve your educational goals.
Mobilize.org 2020 Summits
Mobilize.org empowers and invests in Millennials to create and implement solutions to social problems. Their Target 2020 Summits involve community college students around the country in developing solutions to low graduation rates.
At each summit, 150 students work together to identify barriers they face in achieving their educational goals and develop Millennial-led solutions to address them. Applications for Target 2020 Miami will be announced in Spring 2012.
3. I want more information about the job market.
Opportunity Index
Want more information about the economic conditions in your region? Are there good jobs? Do most young people graduate from high school on time? Are family doctors around? It is these central questions and others like them that are the focus of the Opportunity Index. Our partner, Opportunity Nation, created the index because the most commonly discussed measures of economic strength and security - the GDP and the poverty rate - provide too little information for communities who want to boost economic mobility. It’s a great tool for learning about the challenges facing your region.
American Association of University Women
As we note in the toolkit, sometimes average wages do not tell the full story about how much you’ll make in a particular job. Women can face a particularly tough time, as they sometimes still earn less than men in the same fields. The American Association of University Women has produced two resources. The Simple Truth About the Pay Gap (PDF) breaks down the pay gab by state. You can also check out this fact sheet (PDF) that shows differences in pay by occupations in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields. It turns out some fields do a better job of paying women as much as men, while others still have a long way to go.
